June 24, 2011 - Tinges Commons presents Vistaflow, a combination water and watchtower by sculptors Joshua Wade Smith and Graham Coreil-Allen and kiosk painting installation by artist Ryan Neely. Constructed entirely of reclaimed materials, the elevated platform and cistern will feed a gravity-fed, garden irrigation system while serving as public observation deck and hangout spot. Participants are invited to climb, stand, sit and relax on the site-specific, pedestrian furniture while enjoying a ceremonial demonstration of the new watering system. Meanwhile, the adjacent Kiosk will feature a wrap-around painting of geometric abstraction derived from the tower architecture and surrounding public space. Food from the garden will be served and all are welcome.

Tinges Commons at Mirkwood Estates is a community garden and collaborative public art space located on the southeast corner of 33rd and Frisby Streets in Waverly. The site of organic interaction is sponsored by the Better Waverly Community Organization, Greater Homewood Community Corporation, Parks and People, John Hopkins University and Charm City Cakes.

JHU President's Day of Service Paves the Way

On October 2, Tinges Commons and Johns Hopkins University students helped pave the diagonal footpath that cuts through Tinges Commons as part of the JHU President's Day of Service. Through numerous community projects, the annual Day of Service, "serves to honor the university’s dedication to being an integrated and responsible part Baltimore City." Five intrepid volunteers met up that afternoon at Tinges Commons, picked up shovels and laid bricks for an entire afternoon. Thanks to Arianne Sevilla and Catherine Eagan for helping to coordinate the event and the JHU Center for Social Concern for buying all the bricks. Extra special thanks to MyShawndria Ward, Rachel Pretlow, Gosha Krakowiak, Pat Geronimo, Tania Chan, Hannah Brancato, Kit Repass and Cheryl Carmona for making the diagonal path a reality!

October 3, 2010 - Tinges Commons presents Laura Hudson's Everybody is Friends Here, an integration of social happening, participatory paintings and responsive representations consisting of video stills and painting. The social gathering is a meet and greet where fake flowers and special nametags will facilitate flirtatious and awkward interactions. Following the event, the Tinges Commons kiosk will serve as a canvas for Hudson's iconic painting and printed selection of video stills. Based on the kiosk images, the artist will create a final studio painting that will later become a thank-you print distributed to all participants involved. Meanwhile, a series of three "face cutout" paintings installed on the site invite passersby to become different characters. The cutout panels tell a simple story about two creatures meeting and ends with an intimate embrace. As the story progresses, the characters become closer and closer, and in the final panel the cutouts become one - inviting participants to kiss. Through the social happening, painted representation, print exchange, and participatory cutouts, Everybody is Friends Here is an integration of intimate interaction and representation thereof.

As the summer heat exaggerates all tasks outdoors, Tinges Commons presents Wayscapes - a situation of impacts and meditational spaces orchestrated through interactive sculptures by Joshua Wade Smith and Beki Basch. Tinges Commons is a community garden and collaborative public art space at the southeast corner of Frisby and 33rd Streets in Waverly, Baltimore.

For Wayscapes, Smith and Basch will install a collection of wood-built, site-specific sculptures that investigate instances of collapse and invite place-based meditation. Smith presents Fall Wall and Face Plant, with the former an index of actions provoked by the latter. Through images and architectural form, Fall Wall represents moments of instability initiated by the artist as he repeatedly fell over the objects of Face Plant. Turning from objects of artist action to spaces for participant transformation, Basch presents SANDBOX/SWEATBOX. Consisting of a sandbox and wooden stall, Basch's project is an invitation for simple meditation and playful transformation within the context of a liminal yet dynamic public space. In addition to the artists' individual projects, Basch and Smith will also collaborate on a series of improvised platforms for discrete actions throughout the site.

Wayscapes will open with a garden party on Sunday, August 1st, 2010, from 4-6pm. The party will include free food from the community garden and local farmers market prepared by Tinges Commons volunteers. All are welcome.

Tinges Commons is funded by the Greater Homewood Community Corporation, The Parks and People Foundation and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts.

WYPR Midday Composting Question

Assistant Health Commissioner Madeleine Shea dodged my question about a city-wide composting program to help out community gardens and such by deferring to the city's budget crisis. Homeworks” explores the use of domestic space as a site-specific medium for artistic practice. Artists in the show install, create, perform, and grow works in and around their living space. In this way the work is part performance, part collaboration, part installation, and part daily domestic experience.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, February 19th, from 6-8pm at the CCBC Dundalk Gallery. In the spirit of Mirkwood, the opening will feature three live performances by musicians Andy Hayleck, Bethany Dinsick and Owen Gardner.

Tinges Commons announces the opening of “Goodnight” by Liz Zacharia

Baltimore, MD, October 19, 2009 - Tinges Commons will present its third public art installation, “Goodnight”, by Liz Zacharia, from November 3 - December 12, 2009 at the southeast corner of 33rd and Frisby Streets in Waverly. The exhibition’s interactive geodesic dome and modified Tinges Commons Kiosk will invite viewers to explore a hidden universe of light and reflection.

Liz Zacharia creates spaces that invite people to participate in the revelation of phenomenon. This participation reminds the viewer of their active role in the process of shaping the piece. Goodnight offers two apertures for participation, crawling into the geodesic dome and peering into the kiosk. Within the geodesic dome, the viewer will find a space to contemplate a starry night sky that otherwise might be invisible to them in our light polluted skies. Within the kiosk the viewer will see a fantastical interior of reflection and kinetic light.

Tinges Commons is a community garden and collaborative, contemporary public art space at the southeast corner of Frisby and 33rd Streets in Waverly, Baltimore. An opening reception for Goodnight is planned for Tuesday, November 3, 2009, from 5-7pm.

Tinges Commons is funded by the Greater Homewood Community Corporation, the Maryland Cooperative Extension, the Maryland State Arts Council, Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts.

We here at Tinges Commons are pleased to extend an open invitation to our second garden party and public art opening. Come and enjoy freshly prepared food from the community garden as we celebrate the comfortable weather and two new art installations by Cyle Metzger and Colin Benjamin. Tinges Commons is a community garden and collaborative public art space at the southeast corner of Frisby and 33rd Streets in Waverly, Baltimore.

Tinges Commons is proud to present its second public art show featuring works by Cyle Metzger and Colin Benjamin. Color Path Projections includes two vivid installations that use line, color and space to emphasize movement along the adjacent footpath. On the Tinges Commons Kiosk, Metzger presents us with PS5, a self-described "paintstallation" that uses two-dimensional plains to imply a three-dimensionality of the space within the image. The colors for the billboard-style painting are intended to be integrative yet vibrant, making use of the area's own palette to emphasize a footpath that naturally emerged from the site and inspired an effort to improve the quality of its common use.

Benjamin offers us Present paths are reflective spaces (here and there), a site-specific, tensile structure of driveway reflectors and bright flagging tape suggesting internal tension and spatial projection within the compact pedestrian zone. The architectural configuration of ephemeral construction materials exists outside of the frame of everyday route and routine, asking the pedestrian to make a mental and physical leap between "here and there". Through playful color and dynamic spatial relationships, the artists hope to enhance pedestrian experience within Tinges Commons and challenge its users to reconsider their engagement with public space.

Collard Greens Recipe

This is my favorite way to eat collards:
Ingredients:
Collards (about a dozen or so big leaves)
Bacon (at least six slices)
Cherry tomatoes (at least a dozen)
Lil orange tomatoes (I don't know what these are really called, you probably want 4)
A sweet red onion (They have these at Costco right now. Vidalias are also good. Any kind is good.)
Paprika
Salt
Pepper
Canola oil
Apple Cider Vinegar

Slice the bacon across the the grain while it is still sitting as a slab. You want to have lots of little shreds of it.
Put the bacon in a sautee pan on medium heat.
While the bacon is cooking, julienne cut the onion. Like lines of longitude.
Throw the onions in there, with some salt and pepper and paprika. You can use Old Bay instead if you want to keep it simple.
Turn the heat to low.
While that stuff is starting to cook, you can go pick the collards. Try to knock the weird white bugs off the collards while you are still outside.
Tear the collard leaves off of their steams. I don't eat the stems. You can if you want to. Wash the torn up leaves well. You're probably going to eat some bug eggs but they won't kill you or make you sick. You won't even taste them.
Mix the leaves into the simmering bacon and onions. Scoop up the bacon and onions on top of the collards. Make sure the collards are coated in bacon fat. Pour a little canola oil in the pain and a little apple cider vinegar. Just enough to keep everything wet. Stir it up and cover. Turn the heat up to medium.
Go out and pick the tomatoes. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half and cut the lil orange tomatoes into quarters.
Check and make the collards are getting nice and soft. Put the tomatoes in the pan and cover it again. Let it simmer for about 15 minutes or so.
That's it!

On Sunday, July 26th, from 4-8pm, Tinge Commons will host “Waverly Pastoral”, its first public art opening and garden party featuring installations by Liz Donadio and Clarissa Gregory alongside freshly prepared organic food from the community garden. Tinges Commons is a community garden and collaborative, contemporary public art space at the southeast corner of Frisby and 33rd Streets in Waverly, Baltimore.

Waverly Pastoral will feature two art projects exploring natural spaces within the urban environment. Liz Donadio will present “Hidden Waverly”, a series of large-scale photographs focusing on discrete pockets of wild greenery within Waverly. A neighborhood map will show participants where to find these hidden green spaces. Meanwhile, Clarissa Gregory will set up “Waiting for the birds”, a sculptural forest installation of growth and decay populated by a variety of enchanting trees made out of scavenged materials. Combined, these installations will offer viewers a poetic situation of half reality and half fantasy.

The art opening will be part of a garden party celebrating the grand opening of Tinges Commons as a community green space in Waverly. The party will include free food from the community garden prepared by volunteers on site. Resonating with nearby gardens and the local farmers market, this event will be an opportunity for neighborhood residents and the public at large to get to know each other and learn more about Waverly as an exciting place for sustainable green projects.

Tinges Commons is funded by the Greater Homewood Community Corporation, the Maryland Cooperative Extension, the Maryland State Arts Council, Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.
